“A grapefruit-infused white. Lush, yet backed by a firm structure. Shows more up front than on the finish, so give it time to integrate.”

J.L. Wolf Pechstein Riesling Spätlese 2004
“Although this is labeled Spätlese, it’s quite dry, coming in at only 18 grams per liter of residual sugar. The aromas are reminiscent of Chablis, with notes of sweet corn, ripe apple and flint. On the palate it’s full in body, showing a lovely clarity of flavor and a powerfully earthy note of soil. It continues to gain in complexity and depth as it sits in the glass, building to a long and refined finish.”

J.L. Wolf Wachenheimer Belz Riesling Spätlese 2005
“In this vintage, this wine seems to be singing. Its minerality is prominent under the luscious depth of ripe mango and tangerine fruit, and a taut spine of acidity keeps it brisk all the way through a long finish.”

Villa Wolf Gewürztraminer 2006
“To most American wine consumers, German wine is synonymous with Riesling, but it doesn’t need to be that way. Nor does good Gewürztraminer have to come from Alsace. Exhibit 1 for both counterarguments is this charming little number from Germany’s Pfalz region and world-renowned winemaker Ernst Loosen. Varietally correct scents of rose petals and spice burst from the glass, followed by pear and melon fruit. It’s all backed by acidity that’s fairly crisp for Gewürztraminer and relatively modest residual sugar.” Best Buy

Villa Wolf Pinot Gris 2006
“Very pale gold, with rich aromas on the nose of ripe apples and pears, a touch of honey, spice and apricot but also an underlying minerality and citrussy streak. Lovely depth of fruit in the mouth giving richness and roundness without too much alcohol.”

“After having made better wines in 2005 than in 2004, Ernie Loosen has pulled another two rabbits out of his hat in 2006, confirming my predictions from last year. He may not yet be consistent across the full range, but given the owner's reputation on the Mosel and the excellent sites he owns here, this estate is now able to compete with anyone in the Pfalz.”
